So you’ve made the choice to join a gym? Amazing! Now you actually have to find the motivation to go. This is something that A LOT of people struggle with. We’ve put together some tips to help you overcome this lack of motivation, to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your gym experience (and your money).
First off, come up with some goals for yourself. What do you want to gain from going to the gym? Maybe you want to build up some strength or improve your stamina. Make sure these goals are realistic to your level of fitness, there’s no shame in starting small if this means that your goals could be more achievable. Once you start smashing goals and seeing results, you’ll feel more motivated to keep going back. You need to be open to failure as well. It can be very easy to feel discouraged if you’re not seeing results as quickly as you’d like. This is why hard work and consistency are so important!
With this in mind, make sure you’re being tough on yourself. Making promises to yourself and keeping them builds up a lot of self-confidence, which is necessary for trying new things like starting up at a gym or taking your workout routine to the next level. Reward yourself for your achievements! Make sure you’re giving yourself enough rest time. It’s all about making your gym experience POSITIVE, so you’re more likely to keep going back, and actually want to go back.
Try improving your diet to get more energy. It could be that your lack of motivation stems from a lack of correct nutrients that gives your body fuel. Check out our blog on How to Improve Your Energy Levels Naturally. Make sure you’re eating a protein-rich diet and keeping hydrated. Eating clean will also help you recover properly from your gym sessions and ensure you’re not burning out too quickly or causing unnecessary strain.
Probably the most important way to overcome a lack of motivation to hit the gym is to make it FUN. There are many ways you can do this. Try organising a group of friends to go to the gym with, getting that sense of community and working towards a common goal to keep you going back. You should try and have supportive people around you that push you when necessary and know when to tell you to get off the couch and go. Try random classes at your gym that sound fun. Maybe you’ve never tried hot yoga or barre pilates, you might even find a new favourite way to work out. Lastly, create a playlist of songs that make you feel excited and get you up and moving, so that you can listen to them while working out.
Good luck!
