Do you know where your food comes from?

What you eat and where it comes from is important. Eating local not only supports our farmers immensely but it also takes care of your health. So why should we be more conscious about what we eat and go back local farmers? Here are just a few benefits:

  • The environment loves it. Local food doesn’t have to travel long distances to arrive on your plate, so in the long term this helps reduce greenhouse gases and contributes to improving our carbon footprint.
  • The Australian economy is benefited. Supporting local farmers and other producers means we are keeping our money within Australia.
  • Sustainable agriculture is encouraged, and the supply chain is tracked back to the point of origin to evaluate ecological practices.
  • Less chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, and additives. These toxins are used to preserve the food in generic supermarkets to keep the food fresh for purchase, even though it’s been sitting in store for some time.
  • The nutrient value is higher as the food grown and harvested locally is given more time to ripen and grow the way it should.
  • The taste is 10 x better! The flavour and crispiness of food is second to none when it is fresh.

Pesticides are another food concern to watch out for. Not only are they harmful to our environment, but they’re just as harmful to our health. When they pesticides become stored in the colon, they slowly wreak havoc on our guts and bodies. For example, when you eat a non-organic apple, you are consuming over 30 different pesticides that have been sprayed onto that apple, even when washed they are still pesticides lingering and seep into the fruit. Strawberries, apples, carrots, celery, spinach, grapes, and cucumbers are just a handful of foods that you should look to buy organic because the pesticide levels are higher. So, what can pesticides do to your health? Studies have show that pesticides are linked to harming the nervous system, the reproductive system, and the endocrine system, meaning it increases your chances to develop diseases like Alzheimer’s or ADHD.

Food packaging is another area in the food industry where we are starting to see improvements with more sustainable, biodegradable, and recyclable options being used… but there is still a long way to go. Food packaging is made to make food safe, reliable, and shelf-stable, but unfortunately most food packing is designed to be single use and not recycled. With so much plastic ending up in our waterways and polluting the ocean this has put the world into “a planetary crisis”. So, when having the opportunity to choose innovative packaging that is less harmful to animals, people and the environment, it was a no-brainer to make Cleanfit packaging with the best that eco-friendly packaging has to offer, and we’ve proven that choosing an environmental option does not have to jeopardise quality or image. Embracing sustainable food manufacturing and production is at Cleanfits core, due to the increasing effects of climate change, the topic of sustainability couldn’t be more prominent. Sustainable food manufacturing involves several factors, but overall it’s about how the food is produced, distributed, and packaged. One aspect of adopting this process is being more eco-friendly along with food processing equipment that is energy efficient. So, what is sustainable food manufacturing?
